Gypsy Vanner Horses
This spectacular horse story begins in
1994 when this breed was discovered in England & Ireland. In
1996 there were fourteen mares and two stallions imported to the
United States, since then many dedicated horse lovers have been
successfully breeding & preserving this magical old breed in the
US & now Canada !
What is a Gypsy Vanner Horse?.....its a special breed of horse
that the Gypsy people of the United Kingdom created to pull
there colorful Bow Top Wagons / Caravans....the word "Vanner"
means a horse suitable to pull a Caravan!!!.....The first
original registry of these 'Gypsy Vanner Horses" (The Gypsy
Vanner Horse Society) was established in 1996... it is the
largest and has the tightest breed standards to maintain the
certain look the Gypsy Vanner Horse has....The (GVHS) helps out
there members by offering training to breeders & Judges so they
will maintain and judge the proper standards of the Gypsy Vanner
Horse!
These horses will often be called by slightly different names
over in the UK or here in North America such as: Gypsy Cobs,
Feathered Cobs, Irish Cob, Tinker Horse etc etc.
The Gypsy culture in parts of the United Kingdom is very much
alive today. Their customs have been passed down verbally from
generation to generation for centuries. Some Gypsy people still
travel in horse drawn caravans. The Gypsies are excellent
breeders and have a clear vision on what type of horse they
want. The Classic Gypsy Vanner Horse stands between 14 & 15.1
HH. These horses are strong compact cobs, mostly black & white
coloring, although some solid colors are available. These horses
have outstanding long manes and tails and heavy feathering
covering their hooves. The Gypsy people are very involved with
their horses every day. Gypsy children often entertain
themselves by playing on and around these horses for hours thus
they had to have an extremely gentle & quiet temperament as well
as being beautiful. Gypsy Vanner Horses were developed to be
excellent driving horses with great endurance, but because of
there awesome quiet temperament they are an excellent choice for
dressage, pleasure riding for children, new riders, and riders
with physical or emotional limitations. These horses are easy
keepers and extremely sound with a smooth gait for long distance
traveling. The main breeds in their pedigree are Friesian,
Shire, Clydesdale and Dales Pony.
